Kids begin to form a view on gender roles as early as 18 months of age. And, yes, it's certainly important that they begin to understand the differences between men and women... but it's even more important that they form a healthy and balanced view of what these differences mean.
The publishing industry hasn’t changed much in the last century and so nor have the themes explored within many of the titles on children’s bookshelves. All the while, though, the world has changed markedly. Societal awareness of the issues that impact the earth has grown immensely and our children are growing up to face challenges that we didn’t even know existed all those years ago.
