An excerpt from the story
There was once an old lady called Mother Nature. She lived in the mountains and she swam in the streams, and she brewed all the colours that I saw in my dreams.
She was tall and wide, and had trees for her thighs, and she listened and listened to the skies and the tide. She could jump between mountains and turn waterfalls to fountains, and she could swim in the sea much deeper than me.
She could run faster than leopards and protect sheep like the shepherds, and yet she cried like the tide as the planet died at her side.
She pleaded to the people to not litter the seas, and she asked them kindly to not fell the trees.
She shielded the animals from the hunters and thieves, and she begged them to leave the whales in the seas.
She soaked up the sun as its burning begun, and she tried and tried as her home slowly died.
But then YOU came running up by her side!
“Let’s save the planet!” you cried, as the animals cheered far and wide, and the trees stood up taller, side by side...
From the author, Stuart French: why do we need a kids’ book about nature?
Growing up in Tasmania, I was always totally immersed in nature, and absolutely fascinated by it. From a very young age, writing about nature always interested me and so when I started writing for children, crafting a kids’ book on Mother Nature seemed like the most natural thing in the world.
For anyone in my generation, it feels as if we’ve witnessed a century of destruction in our couple of decades here on the planet. Even in my native Tasmania, I know of hundreds of acres of gorgeous wilderness that has been wiped out, and many animal species that are threatened or soon to be extinct. I think when you’re a child, you take much of the environment for granted, but now I’m a parent, I can clearly see that the vast wilderness that I enjoyed for so many years may not be there in the way it’s always been.
I want my own sons to feel that they can change this. Children play a critical part in working with Mother Nature to protect our planet, not destroy it. If we’re able to help build character through children’s books, then they will be keenly aware of the difference they can make. I’d love to see things turned around in the next few decades and I have every faith that if we teach our children that they have the power to go out and change things, they’ll do just that.
We write about nature, because we care about nature
We create gorgeous children’s books with a message. But when we produce them, we also send a message.
The overwhelming majority of the world’s children’s books are produced in high-polluting factories, with non-recycled paper and petroleum-based ink, which is terrible for the environment. Here at Ethicool, we knew that wasn’t an option for us - we couldn’t very well contribute to the problem we were trying to solve. That’s why Ethicool books are printed on recycled papers, using soy-based, environmentally safe inks.
My 3 year old daughter loves this book, she is so taken with the persona of Mother Nature. I think she really feels her sadness through the illustrations (which is a big compliment to the amazing illustrator) The story itself is simple to follow and is absolutely clever as it involves the reader. This makes the experience even more enjoyable for the child. My daughter was so happy to learn she has the power to help mother nature which lead to a discussion around saving water, not using plastic etc. I recommend it highly.
